Every month, there will be a sustainability board update that is available online. Postings include the monthly poster, postcards, a green tip, events to attend, informational articles, interesting facts, artwork related to the designated topic, a photo of a staff or faculty doing the "green" thing, seasonal fruit and vegetable information, and a green challenge.
August 2011: campus sustainabilityThis month, we focus on the different projects and initiatives that are going around campus. What does sustainability even mean? Did you know that UC Berkeley has a greenhouse gas emission reduction target? This target is called Climate Action Partnership (CalCAP).
What does
“sustainability” mean? What is UC Berkeley
doing about sustainability? Campus Sustainability
Organizations Office of
Sustainability (OS) is
an admin dept that develops,
coordinates, and supports campus
sustainability goals and
initiatives by writing an annual
Campus Sustainability Report and
Plan and implementing various
carbon-reducing programs.
Through the report, you can read
about the most recent
sustainability projects and
future targets! They also host 1
student forum a semester. Chancellor’s Advisory
Committee on Sustainability
(CACS) is made up of
faculty, staff, students, and
alumni and charged w/ advising
the Chancellor on matters
pertaining to UCB environment &
sustainability. They hold
monthly meetings open to
everyone, host events to engage
the entire campus in an ongoing
dialogue about sustainability,
and always throw a great
end-of-the-year sustainability
summit! Berkeley Institute of
the Environment (BIE)
brings together faculty,
research centers, and students
for roundtable discussions and
collaborations to foster and
scale up solutions to complex
environmental problems. The
institute offers many research
and student programs, hosts
symposiums, seminars, and
discussions, and ultimately
leverages the collective
resources at UC Berkeley to
strengthen and expand
environmental theory and
understanding. BIE Enviro Portal
is a great resource for
students to find environmental
classes to take, student groups
to join, and events to attend.
It is a branch off of BIE for
student. Check out their
environmental event calendar! Green Facilities
Services- 65% of water
consumption and almost 80% of
the campus’ greenhouse gas
emissions are related to
buildings, the department
Facilities Services is dedicated
to creating and maintaining
greener buildings.

What You Can Do Join others in conserving energy by turning off unused studio and hallway lights, riding your bike, reporting leaky faucets to facilities services, using less paper towels to clean your art supplies, and eating sustainable, local, seasonal, and organic foods. |
See something
unsustainable? Speak up! Email sustainability@berkeley.edu about it.. |
This month, we focus on how to pick the "greener" option when it comes to purchasing art supplies. What exactly does 30% recycled content mean when it comes to sketchbooks? Where do I get reusable art supplies?
October 2011: WaterThis month, we focus on how to save water in Kroeber. Water can be saved by cleaning your art supplies with soap and cloth.
November 2011: EnergyThis month, we focus on how to save energy in Kroeber. Easy green tips include turning off the lights when you are the last one to leave the art studio during late night hours or turning off the hallway lights when it is bright outside. Also, if you are the last one to leave the restroom, turn off the lights.
December 2011/January 2012: Purchasing & ReusingThis month, we focus on how to change the world with your dollars! You are a consumer and when you purchase something, you'll telling companies something. When you purchase bleached, virgin paper rather than recycled paper, you are telling companies to continue to cut down trees. Instead, reuse paper, use scratch paper, buy paper with at least 30% recycled content.
March 2012: TransportationThis month, we focus on how transportation affects our greenhouse gas emissions. Did you know the way you transport yourself to school affects UC Berkeley's GHG inventory? That means that if you were to drive to school, UC Berkeley would have a higher carbon footprint than if you were to walk to school.
For this reason, we like to support walking (keeps you fit!), biking (also keeps you fit!), using public transportation, and carpooling (saves gas money!). There are also a lot of ride-share options available to UC Berkeley staff and students such as Zimride, ride-share, and Zipcar.
Want to learn more about UC Berkeley public transportation? Click here to learn about UC Berkeley Parking & Transportation. Also, get to know 411.org, Clipper Card, BART, and other excellent resources.
April 2012: FoodThis month, we focus on sustainability regarding food and food-related activities. Whether you're eating out or eating-in, you can be more sustainable in your habits. Try to reduce your meat consumption as meats, especially red meats which have a higher carbon footprint due to their energy intensive demands. Try meatless Mondays!
May 2012: Miscellaneous SustainabilityThis month, we focus practicing sustainable living habits that people often neglect. This can be using less staples and paperclips or sending less emails. Sending unnecessary emails actually increases your carbon footprint as saving and sending emails requires the use of server space and it takes a lot of energy (and therefore water) to keep servers running 24/7.
